Budget DAC/Amp for HD598 ~$100 range?

Hi,

I'm usually a fan of speakers, but I'm away for the summer and have to have headphones at work. Thus, I bought the Sennheiser HD598s thinking that would suffice until I got back to my home setup. But I got a nasty surprise when they sounded really terrible!

I have good reason to believe that my work laptop as a source is really killing the sound quality of the Sennheisers. I just need something good that I can use at work that isn't too fancy but will do the job (I will probably end up keeping the headphones and DAC/amp for when I can't use my speakers, e.g. when my suitemates are asleep).

I've been looking at the FiiO E7 and Nuforce uDAC-2, and was also recommended the Nuforce Icon Mobile.

Does anyone have input on this?

Thank you!

Can you describe the nasty sound?

I'm perfectly happy with an Anedio D1 biggrin.gif

Sure. Some tones have got a grungy edge to it, and in most music I hear a lot of graininess.
