Distortion when using headphone out with speaker dock

Thread Starter
I have a monochrome 4th gen iPod, and when I use it at max volume connected to a speaker dock with an aux wire, the sound is very distorted. As I turn down the iPod volume and increase the speaker volume, the sound clears up considerably.

When I use the actual dock on the speaker (so using the line out on the iPod), the sound is always clear. Can someone explain this difference as I thought the headphone out on max volume was more or less the same as line out (remember reading this from the DIYmod thread).

Either your info about the headphone jack output at full volume being the same level as the line out port on the iPod is in error, or perhaps the aux input on the speaker dock has a different impedence than the actual docking port itself.  It may also be a case of the line out on the iPod bypassing any EQ setting you might be using when listening through the headphone jack (I assume iPods do this).  In any event, having the volume turned up on the iPod all the way is obviously overloading the aux input, hence the distortion.biggrin.gif

Sounds like signal clipping.
