Requirements
I'm looking for an audio setup for my apartment living area that is approx 20ft x 10ft. Ceilings are about 9ft.
The source will be a laptop/iMac.
I have a long but shallow desk so there isn't heaps of space (especially for rear ported speakers) however I am open to speaker stands either side of my desk if I need them.
I have neighbors either side so really want to system to perform at medium listening volumes, nothing that will annoy them.
Options
I'm interested in both the Audioengine A2 or A5.
I've sampled the A2's in a shop, they were connected to a laptop. I've been told they will sound a lot better with something like the NuForce Icon Amp/DAC in between so it was hard to judge. I did find the bass a little lacking (Not sure how it would sound with the NuForce added though), especially since I listen to lots of Hip Hop, Electro and Dance.
I've heard the A5's have more base, but without hearing them (And I can't find anywhere to sample them) I can't be sure what it will be like.
I could consider a separate sub woofer, but wouldn't know which to go with.
Questions
Which would be the better set up, A2's with a sub, or A5 alone. (bare in mind i don't want to annoy my neighbors)
What amp/DAC would be best suited to these set ups? Should I look at getting an external soundcard?
Any recommendations on which sub to go for if I end up getting the A2's?
