Fisher turntable cartrdige question

Thread Starter

ok so i just joined head-fi biggrin.gif Hi all

so much useful info here.

my question deals with my old turntable, its a fisher mt-275.

i dont really know much about it other than it was made in the 80's. sound quality i dont know if its good either. i wanted to install a new cartridge, and ive noticed that cartridges have 4 leads to connect to the arm. but my turntable has 7.

also is the turntable worth keeping and installing a new cartridge? or would it be best to just save up and get new???

i havent tried messing with it yet because i dont want to screw things up. these pics hopefully illustrate my question. is it a special type of cartridge? or are the three wires at the top something else? hopefully i made some sense and someone will be able to help out

thanks 1.jpg

First of all, you should never place the needle on the mat like you are doing!

That little plastic cover protects the needle when not in use.

I hope you didn't damage the needle!

They are pretty fragile.

This is pretty interesting -- I have never heard of a seven-lead cartride.

But what I think from the pictures is the extra leads are for the gimicky track sensor that let's you skip bands like a CD player skips tracks (or really more like an automatic music sensor cassette deck).

If so, most standard mm carts should work, minus the track sensor functionality.

It does not appear to be a very good turntable, but maybe the equal of, say, a technics sl-b2 in it's various iterations.

It may originally have been part of a "rack system" sold at appliance and department stores in the 80s.

See if you can find the service manual over at the Vinyl Engine. They should have one. Be sure to follow the maintenance procedures.

Then visit the Needle Doctor. They should have what you need to get this back into service.

Seven leads... is this a quadrophonic deck?
