Recommendations for my new dorm speakers?

So I'm heading off to college this coming fall and I want a nice pair of desktop speakers to replace the ancient Boston's I have now. I was at the Bose store yesterday checking out the Companion 5 multimedia speaker system and I really like them. The size and sound was great. $350 is the most I would be spending, but I do want a nice set. So I need something that won't take up a lot of space, cost under $350, sound decent, and get loud. What can you guys suggest?

Thanks in advance!

Colin

Avoid the bose, they sound horrid, if you want a 2.1 consider the edifier s530, if you want a 2.0 set then consider the prodipe pro 8.

i love my audioengine a5 w/ wireless adapter   and you can always add a sub... or you can do a2

the audioengine A5 are the best you will find for your budget.

or, i should rephrase that - they are the best i've heard in that price range.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm checking them out right now and they look great. I also want to mention that I am mainly going to be using my built in sound card (IDT 92HD81B1X @ Intel Ibex Peak PCH - High Definition Audio Controller) and my iPod. I'd really like some 2.1 speakers, but if I can get a subwoofer separately I'd definitely be interested.

EDIT: I'd also like something a bit smaller than the A5's. Something closer to the size of the Companion 5s.

Acoustic Energy Aego M

I definitely really like the size and look of the Aego M but I'm not very happy about the placement of the volume control... That seems like the worse place in the world for volume control... I also don't really know anything about Acoustic Energy. What do other people think? Aego M is the way to go or should I keep looking?

oh, the Roth Charlie 2.0 or 2.1, focal XS thingy, b&w mm-1, audico mps-1, etc etc

tbh there are lots and lots of them out there.  the Roth Charlie might be okay for you since its has a remote but the sub on the 2.1 is meant to be displayed though not hidden.

also  i dont think the Aego M has that weird a volume location, if your sat at a computer desk, the sub goes under so its still within arms reach

so what I had was the Boston Micromedia 2.1 system and I really liked it. The sound was good, the speakers were unbreakable, they got loud, the sub had it's own volume control, and the volume knob was on like a 10 foot cord so I could set it on my desk or bring it over to the couch. I suppose I can get a wireless volume controller and a volume control for the sub isn't THAT important, but the system was really nice and I'd like something with similar perks.

I have a set of Aego M's and they are the perfect dorm speaker in my mind. The sound is fantastic for such a small speaker. I'm going to be getting a Nuforce Icon-2 to power that and my headphones and there's a volume control on that which I can use. rather than just the OS-based volume control.

To be honest, I've yet to hear speakers for that price that sound better. And you talk about unbreakable, the satellites are metal and the speaker housing is wood (I think particle board or something like that). I shipped mine across the country in one of my bags. We all know how mistreated airline baggage is. They came out just fine.

This is actually the second set I've had. I had one set when I was in London but sold them when I moved back. I thought, "They're so heavy. I'm sure I could replace them no problem." Not true. The only problem with the Aego M's is it's hard to find them. I think there's one company on the west coast that sells them. Expect to pay more for them because of it, but trust me, they are worth every penny.

Wow! Well thank you for the very insightful review! That definitely boosts my confidence. I won't be buying the speakers until I get back from vacation around late July, but right now it looks like I'll be getting the Aego Ms

If you're disappointed I'll be VERY surprised. That being said, take a look and see if you can find them on eBay before buying them new. That's how I got mine. These are speakers that you aren't going to blow out and they're built like a tank so they're not going to be broken. You might be able to save yourself some money (I got mine for $200) that way. If not, they're work a lot more than full-retail anyway.

Oh, and in terms of loudness, I use these things in my room with my iMac and when I have my iMac on full I never go beyond the first 1/4th volume on the Aego M's. My parents used to use them for speakers when they had parties and wanted dancing in a room and even then I never went above half volume.

The Aego M's have alot of mixed reviews online it seems people either love them or hate them, I considered buying them once aswell but the reviews put me off and I ended up with the logitech z2300, like any logitech set the bass is bloated and the satilites are a bit tinny sounding and the midrange is mostly missing like most 2.1 sets, the edifier 2.1 sets are the best i've heard they sound so much better because they use small 2-way bookshelfs rather than a satilite speaker with 1 small driver and theres not such a noticable drop in midrange.
