Rotating a driver inside the headphones? Any problems with this?

Hello all.

I am about to recable my AKG K518/K81 with a single sided detachable cable on the left cup. the problem is that there is a lack of space in the cup. See pic.

To allow for a bit more space I want to take out the driver and rotate it about 90 degrees so the solder pad isn't at the very bottom. Does anyone know of any problems with this? are there any consequences with rotating a driver? Its perfectly circular so I don't think fit will be a problem. Will there be any sound differences?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

I doubt there would be any difference, but you could always leave it the same way and simply have slightly longer wires.

Some sennheisers and others have the drivers angled a little bit to make the sound more open, and engulfing, but if not, you're fine.

The headphones with the drivers at an angle usually mount the drivers on a board which is angled. They dont have the angle "built into" the drivers themselves.

For the vast majority of headphones rotating the driver is totally fine.

If the driver has assymetrical perforations on the back (some sony's come to mind) Id probably lean away.

Id also be afraid of damaging the driver trying to pry it free of its mount.
