I has always been interested on diying some portable component when I start going into the portable audio world. Cause a lot of the DIYer from other forums in hong kong keep telling me that make your own amplifier is way cheaper than buying a stock portable amplifier. So I start to do some research through google, and one day I found a interesting product from the eBay. It is a DIY amplifier kit call cmoy. When I read the detail over it, I found that it is a kit that includes every component that is required for making a amplifier. For example like capacitor, resistor and opamp etc. So I think it's fits what I want, so I order one from the internet

After a week of waiting, the DIY kit finally arrived,it comes with a well finished plastic bag. Every component in the kit are well organized with the components specification and names on it so you won't be confused over it. On the "motherboard" of the amplifier it marks whack component should be solder on it so it's easier for me to know which component to put in that place

Songs

Girls’ Generation - Hoot, Forever

Mblaq - Cry

First Impression

I was shocked when I listened for the first time, in my opinion it drove my Shure e5c perfectly. The high, low and mid’s all balanced harmonically. I think nothing could beat it from this price point is quite comparable to my Corda XXS.

Review

For the review I’ve used some K-pop to test the songs out.

Hoot - Girls’ Generation - It starts off with a really sharp intro, the detail was clear and noticeable. The bass was clear and concentrated and it penetrate into my ear directly, where I don’t feel the sense of blur at all. The mid’s are fabulous where all nine members voices are distinguishable.

Forever - Girls‘ Generation - Great, wide sound stage. The mid’s are clear and touching. (I’m a Chinese and i don’t understand what they sang, however by listening to this system i was caught into the emotions expressed by the song) The high’s are appropriate, all range are just equally balance.

Cry - Mblaq - Again, great wide soundstage. Clear mid’s, i can say it’s fascinating the emotional expression are sounds really naturally. The bass hits clearly.

Eg Still have somwork to do on making the case, if i have finished it it should look like the one in the link

I was looking at these on ebay as well, but was weary about the quality of the components. While doing research I realized the sound quality is directly linked to it. So I was more interested in buying from mouser just to avoid it altogether.

Have you compared this unit with one built with mouser/digikey parts?

Nobe, since i'm a new kid in diy world, i just find myself lost since there are too much component. So i just decide to buy this since this product seems pretty succesful here in hong kong. Alot of people from where i am are discussing on it.

For something like cMoy, unless it is something completley revolutionary, just follow the schematic and put it on a perforated board. It's much cheaper, and you can get the layout you want to meet any space requirement or ideas you might have.
