Complete noob on hardware setup

I have an old set of Klipsch Promedia 4.1 computer speakers that have a dead control pod.  They have been replaced with a set of 2.1 Klipsch promedia that is starting to show the same symptoms that killed the old set.

I would like to upgrade from my computer's onboard sound, and I started wondering if there is a way to kill two birds.  I could buy an external DAC/amp for headphones that could also output to all these speakers I have lying around.  The thought being that the volume knob on the control pod is just an amp anyway.

So my questions are
1) How could I connect my speakers with the 2-wire hookups to the RCA-style speaker outputs on an amp?  Do I need to go DAC/Amp -> Receiver -> speakers?
2) Could the 2 RCA outputs work with 4 or 5 speakers in surround?
3) Could I independently control the bass level like I can on the Promedia controls?  Or would that be in software?

My desk space is limited so I can't go with too much hardware.  I also understand that while the speakers have a standard connector, the subwoofer might not, in which case it could be replace with something more standard.

I also do about 75% gaming, 25% music, and 50/50 between headphone and speakers.  I've love to hear some suggestions.

I'm not sure what your trying to do here?, power the 2 Klipsch speakers from the 2.1 with a seperate amp? , these speakers are most likely passives with the amp being in the sub, if you want to power them seperatly you will need a speaker amp that can power the (ohm) load, and your need to remove the rca plugs from the speakers so you just have the bare wire.

There are many DAC/AMPs which can power the headphones and speakers but you need to describe your budget and are you want to upgrade internal soundcard too because it will improve the sound quality for both( headphones and speakers) without using extra AMPs/DAC. I will recommend the sound cards like Asus Essence ST/STX and both has RCA out put to power the speakers. I will recommend the AMPs/DAC like Mini i, E7+E9, .

Let me ask another way.  I'll diagram with Device(connection)

Current:

Computer Onboard Sound (1/8 audio) Speakers with Built-in amp (1/8 audio) headphones

Wondering if I can go:

Computer Onboard Sound (digital coax) Dac/Amp (RCA) SOMETHING? (bare wire) Speakers.  Would also hook headphones to amp.

Just trying to understand how to use two-wire type speakers with an amp such as those suggested.
