Thanks for checking back, Eric. No need to apologize for not doing so sooner. I've just been bumping this so incessantly because I want to figure it out sooner than later.
Due to the postal strike in Canada, I may not receive the Grado adpater for a good while regardless of where I order it from. In fact, the reason it costs so much to ship the Cardas is because it is being shipped through UPS due to the strike. Once the strike ends, the shipping will probably drop from $39 to about $10 or $15. That isn't all that much better, really, but it's enough of a difference to make me hold off and consider purchasing either the Cardas or the Grado once the strike is over...
In the meantime, I may be stuck with the adapter that was included with the HD598. Since I am expecting a new and expensive iMac to arrive very soon, the last thing I want to do is immediately damage the jack by using that adapter to listen to my 598s via the iMac.
So, should I just hold off on using the 598s until I can buy another adapter or can I safely (that is, without damaging either the headphones or the jack on my iMac) use the included adapter for a few months (say, until September or October).
Sorry for any redundancy, I'm just super anal about these sorts of things.

No worries. Have you tried looking into the Hosa adapter like the one that HeadRoom carries. It would be a good, cheap stop-gap until you can get a better adapter, that many local pro-audio shops would likely carry. Otherwise, just be very careful with the cord, and you can probably get by with the included adapter for several months, as long as you don't trip on the cord, or otherwise jar the plug.
--Eric
EDIT: using the included adapter won't immediately damage the jack, at least if you are careful not to put stress on the jack. Many people like myself are not careful and trip over cords a lot, so we buy cord-style adapters to avoid undue stress on the connector, but since you are only plugging in the light HD598 cable, and as long as you insert the 1/4" plug into the adapter before plugging it in to the computer, you shouldn't have any issues with longevity of the jack.

I own a pair of HD 598's and am currently driving them off my '08 MacBook Pro with no volume issues. I generally use them around 50% volume and they are quite loud enough for me to be absorbed in the music and hear the instrument separation quite well. The biggest issue is the 'hiss' out of the supplied 3.5mm jack but it's only really noticeable when music is quiet, in breakdowns, or in some classical music. Overall though I am generally pleased with the straight out audio fidelity.
As far as the supplied adapter goes I am using that on my MPB and I'm just anal retentive about being careful, that being said I also have no children or animals to destroy my equipment (not 100% true... I own a 5 pound Chihuahua and I'm quite the animal myself...). But in all seriousness you can absolutely use it with care, I also just ordered the Grado adapter (Amazon) and look forward to being probably still as careful as I was.
On a further and somewhat related note I would recommend a good DAC to eliminate the hiss, I am personally still researching my thoughts on this so I unfortunately can not give you a good recommendation.
Enjoy the 598's they are aesthetically gorgeous in addition to sounding great.
Thanks much to both Eric and homeboyjesus. Good, useful posts.
This is really a fantastic forum and you have put a nervous buyer at ease about many things while also teaching me a lot about properly handling headphones. I'm really glad I was sent over here on a recommendation from another forum.
I'll inevitably return with more questions once I start itching for a DAC or if any further issues crop up.
Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this thread.

I think that for now you should just get a super-cheap Y-adapter from a local hardware store (if it's a soft one, not a hard one without wires) until you can get anything else. Whatever the case may be, I highly doubt such a short adapter would make any difference whatsoever to the sound, although it would be far more convenient to simply use a long adapter like one of those mentioned in this thread. I think Sennheiser should think about packaging one of those with their headphones...it would be far more useful than the included one for most people, I think.
