I personally have a Zune 120GB that I found at a garage sale, and, to be honest, I have no complaints about sound quality. I originally listened to it using a set of Sony MDRNC7's (sadly now broken), and it was extremely clear. Of course, the spinning sound of the hdd can - at times - be repetitive, but it's really not that difficult to cope with. And I can't say I've tried using an amp with it, though I've considered it.
