Zune HD or Zune 120 gig?

Hello.

Anyone out there have any opinion on the sound quality of these two Zune items?

I had the HD (gave it to my daughter) and was thinking about getting a larger HD, then thought that I might want to go for the 120 gig one, instead.

On purely sound quality alone without an amp, how do these differ, if at all?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Pair either Zune w/a Digizoid ZO and both will sound AMAZING!!! I've uesd the amp w/both the Zune HD and my iPod classic - wonderful!!! The Zune's really pair well with it.

One thing to note on the HPO of Zune 120. While to me it sounded good, between tracks you will hear the hard drive whirring with the right phones, this might or might not bother you. This is something common with hard drive based DAP. If you use it with an amp you won't hear it.

Yeah, the HDD spinning up WAS annoying,...Zune HD is ok tho - silent.

Wow.  That noticeable, huh?

Why would putting it through an amp rid it of the sound, I wonder, since it's coming from the headphone out (unless someone's come up with a LOD for it).

Thanks for the info.

Cheers.

BTW, read up briefly on the ZO.  Sounds interesting.  However, I've learned over the last few years that my lifestyle does not allow for anything other than a nekked portable player.

I have a zune hd and it is so sexy sounding. You should get the 64 gig one

"sexy sounding"...bet you're listening to Carmen Cuesta Loeb.  Pure S-E-X-Y voice!  (Check her out.)

I do agree that the HD could be considered "sexy".

I had the 32HD that I gave my daughter.  I liked it quite a bit, and was seriously considering the 64HD one, but then thought, "Heck, why not just go for the 120 gig one?"

The only thing I used the HD for was music downloaded from Zune Pass (which I hope Microsoft doesn't do away with) so was thinking the larger one would be just fine.  Not sure how the noise will do, though.

There's a person selling a used 120gig for 75 bucks.  So if he/she responds to my email, I'll probably just go with that.  If not, then quite possibly back to the HD.

Well, it's definitely there if you listen for it, but not a deal breaker to me. YMMV.

The whirring is the electrical noise from the hard drive motor. Amps has extremely high input impedance and I think it has to do with it. So I suppose with sensitive low impedance phones it would be more noticeable while with higher impedance phones you'll get less of it.

I heard that the HD has the best unamped audio quality except for the hifi man.

With sound being subjective and all, you can't really say one DAP sounds better than another, but I think most people would agree that this isn't true. I LOVED my HD when I had it because of the UI and smoothness, but it just couldn't compare to the J3 after EQ. I was sad to see it go but sound quality really is the most important thing in a DAP.

Thanks, Audiopotamus, for your info.

macrocheesium, I'm not sure what the "J3" you refer to is (is it the latest/greatest from JHA?), but I'm just looking for the better sound between the two in the thread title.  I really enjoy the Zune Pass, which allows me to listen to music/genres that I normally wouldn't purchase.  The sound quality from it ranges from pretty good to merely adequate.  But, for portable use, I don't mind.

(edit:  Just saw that "J3" is a Cowan player.)

I certainly can't speak for anyone buy myself, but sound quality isn't the most important thing in a portable audio player for me.  Don't get me wrong, it's got to sound good, but I no longer have any desire for bulking things up in order to have slightly better sound.

Of course, as with all things audio, YMMV.

Cheers.

Disregarding sound quality, I would definitely rather have the ZHD. My post was a response to Audiopotamus' post about the sound quality.

BTW, the J3 is lighter so the "bulking up" isn't an issue.

Interesting. I'm super satisfied with my HD, but would love to hear this Zo with the TF10s.

I've coupled my Zune 80 with a Fiio E7 to a GR07 and i'm quite happy with the sound that it gives but... i can clearly ear the spinning hdd between tracks and it's quite boring sometimes :(
