Turntable setup for 3k

Thread Starter
Am looking to get a sound system for my apt and kinda want to go with vynil. Have 3k tops for everything. Not looking to upgrade/spend more anytime soon after making the purchase. Also, I am a complete noob here so really don't feel comfortable buying used. (I'm not opposed to buying used gear in general but really wouldn't know what warning signs to loom for with audio equipment.).

My question is, what is the allocation of funds among all the components. I've been reading up on this and some suggest a little over 1k each on turntable (and cart), and speakers, and a little under 1k on preamp/amp. That's what is sort of making sense to me, but just wanted to hear as many views as I can beforemaking the purchase.

Also, is going with one brand for all components a good idea, or is it better to mix an match?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

If you are set on buying new. Walter at underwood hifi could probably put a pretty good setup together for that amount. He sells quite a bit on Audiogon and is pretty cool to do business wth. WWW.Underwoodhifi.com.

They have a nice Music Hall 9.1 on special that should fit your budget.
