Hooking up speakers to tv

I have computer speakers, I was hoping I could use those with tv, somehow. I have headphones with amplier. The old tv is a zenith, it has amplifier jack socket on the back, 1/8 is too small. A 1/4 looks too big, haven't tried a 1/4 yet, have to get one.

The direct tv box has speaker jacks on the back, 1/8th is too big. I guess I'm going to have to get a 1/4 and 3/32 male jack and see if I can get anything to work? The direct tv box has a usb port as does my computer speaker wiring, but, the 1/8th speaker jack won't work. If I get a couple of adapters so I can at least plug-in, am I headed in the right direction? thanks

Doesn't your direct tv box have l/r rca outs? That sounds like the simplest way to go until you get a new tv.

Yes, the box has left and right outs. The computer speakers have only one jack and that won't fit the jack socket on the box. I guess the socket is 2.5, the 3.5 won't work. I'm going to order an adapter and see what happens. I haven't tried the usb port on the box to see if it will fit the usb port on the speakers. If that won't work, have to try something else. Thanks for the reply.

You need a cable like this http://www.markertek.com/Cables/Audio-Cables/Mini-to-RCA-Cables/Hosa-Technology-Inc/CMR-206R.xhtml

3.5 mm TRS to dual RCA jacks x amount length.....Radio Shack has these if you have that store close by...any Best Buy/Circuit City or audio/video store should have them as well. Don't get sucked into buying something expensive.....

Just make sure you get a stereo pair, some of these are mono's.  I made that mistake myself. Didn't realize the cable was mono.

Yeah I'd go for something like this one instead, it's definitely stereo and you're probably better off with a straight plug as well. Also make sure it's long enough!

FYI .....TRS means stereo (Tip Ring Sleeve. IE Tip = R+, Ring = L + and Sleeve = L/R channel - or GND runs). See this link http://www.mediacollege.com/audio/connection/jack-stereo-rca-2.html in this example substitute the 1/4 inch TRS in the drawing with it's mini jack (3.5mm) equivalent.
