Glad it worked out for you and I can certainly understand the appeal of having everything you need in the box instead of on the desktop.

That's just voluntary closing of the mind.

Both Creative and Asus soundcards do have to be installed properly to work as they should, and anyone can do that as long as that person is careful. And FYI, using drivers other than the stock ones that come with the OS (like the ones that are used by external DACs with no drivers) bypass issues and allow a greater control granularity. And like SennheiserHD said, the install only needs to be done once, so if doing a single install raises red flags, than that's kind of your issue, not anything faulty or wrong with the setting up the hardware.

I don't understand why only SOME users would experience this error and not others. It is way too large of a percentage to be quality control (especially a card with as high quality components as the stx), it must be user error. unless you have another theory lol?

If you use low to average sensitivity headphones or earphones you will likely never hear it (white noise), but if you use something with better than 120db/1mW then you will most definately hear the noise. Signal to noise at the best setting (high impedance) is about 117db & is likely slightly poorer than that at the lower impedance settings due to the loss of 3 bits worth of dynamic range. The dynamic range loss though comes off the top (loud end of the dynamic spectrum), That makes the signal to noise about 99db when using the low impedance setting. Add to that the lower performance of the 44.1 KHz sample rate on this card & you may be looking at more like 80-85db dynamic range @ the low impedace setting. High sensitivity earphone will drive you nuts with noise at this performance level even though it would be inaudible with high impedance phones such as the Senhieser HD600-650-800 series phones

Plenty of IEMs are up around there.

Yes I have IEM's that I occassionally use on my computer but mostly I listen to my speakers or my full sizeDenon headphones anymore. Mine are not high sensitivity though. I gave away my high sensitivity ones as I didn't like thier sound. Not enough bass with the ones I had.

My SE530s are probably the most comfortable pair of headphones I've ever owned.  I wear them all day long at work.  I only have full size 'phones for two reasons. 1) They're easier to take on and off if you're listening for short periods.  2) IEMs don't have a large enough soundstage for movies and games.

ewwwwwwwwwww i hate shures, I had a pair and returned them within a week, I can't be bothered worrying about what angle the iem sits in my ear because if it isn't exactly right my music will sound like crap.

Hate ? The only time I've seen people pounce is when someone is looking to install the Asus over a dedicated desktop amp and expecting similar amp performance - as a transport/DAC, I thought it had a solid following here.

Why wouldn't it give similar performance to a dedicated desktop amp?

It probably is with most 'phones but it doesn't have the current for everything.  Orthos in particular, but you've already got an E9 so its not a big deal.

I have never had a problem driving anything with it =)

tbh i bought the e7/e9 don't sound nearly as good as the card.

Have you had any orthodynamic/planar magnetics?  They aren't very efficient.  There are a few other oddballs that need tons of power too, but you're right that the card should be good for the majority of 'phones out there.

Also you can use the card as the DAC and the E9 as just the amp and skip the E7 right?  It has to have a regular stereo line out.
