Custom Headphones that take into account ITD, ILD, and frequency related cues

Hi everyone,

 

I'm curious if any of you know about a consumer friendly company (not a research lab) that will design custom headphones that take into account user specific interaural time differences and interaural level differences. These headphones would be very high end and definitely not toys. The company would have to run a series of tests to determine the user's auditory anatomy so i would prefer if there was a branch of said company in California.

Have you tried Smyth Research? I haven't personally tried it, but I'm told their product is very good and is probably the best you're going to find to a system that takes your HRTF into account.

An HRTF is far too complex for a set of headphones to produce without some form of signal processing being applied to the input signal. For example, some information from the left recorded channel must be reproduced by the right headphone channel and vice versa - this is impossible without a form of crossfeed filter. This sort of processing is typically applied before the power amplification stage - well before the headphones themselves.

Of course, the response of the headphones and amplifier must also be taken into account when processing the signal, which is exactly what the Smyth product does, by measuring the overall response of your system at your ears and correcting accordingly.
