UM3X sent in for service

Hello all,

I noticed recently that the left side housing on my UM3X would make a clicking sound when squeezed lightly between the fingers. The sound is best described as similar to lightly pressing a soda can in and letting it pop back into shape (just much quieter). Sounds like a little "clicker". I closely examined the housing and there is no visible movement in the housing but i figured i would send it in as the warrenty period is soon to expire later this year. It wasnt really a big deal but sometimes i thought i could hear it when wearing them and moving my head certain ways. Plus, i didnt want to wait till the warranty expired and find it getts worse or falls apart. Was curious to know if anyone has had a similiar situation occur with their Westone UM3X housings.

Sounds like driver flex to me. Do you hear it when you adjust the IEM when it's in your ear? If you do, then it probably is driver flex. It happens a lot with cheaper IEMs.

Except that it's normal with quite a few different headphones. Never had some UM3Xs so I don't know about that particular one, but it's just something that happens sometimes and it's normal.  They will probably just send them back to you without "fixing" anything.

Never heard of driver flex on a BA IEM, dynamics yes, but not BA.

You made the right decision sending them back for repairs. They are suppose to be dead silent while moving your head a certain way or tapping on the housing. Sounds like the drivers were loose from their mounts or whatever. I had a similar issue when they exhibited springy noises while moving my head or tapping them. I sent them in for repairs and got them back fixed.

I sent mine last week for a cable issue, it would cause weird noises when walking which is unacceptable for me. But since it was almost 2 years after buying them, I don't know if I'll still benefit from the warranty... Got some SM3 v2 in the mail yesterday as a replacement (I can't live without IEM for too long) and I'll probably sell the UM3X when they are back from repair (I have the normal version with fixed cable).

I think they had a recall on older UM2/UM3X because of this. I have never experienced driver flex with the UM3X

That seems like a good discription of my issue also. I figured might as well send em in and maybe get lucky and they send me a new one ,with detachable cables...........tongue_smile.gif

Does yours have a large, orange dot on the bottom of the box?

People have had warranty returns with the UM3X (removable cables) and that even includes ones with the orange dot on the box. So if you have that reassuring orange dot, it doesn't mean it won't fail.
