Foobar under wine isn't great

MPD apps suck

There are actually a few threads about this. To be honest, I think the best solution is something like iTunes and Pure Music to take over playback.

I use Audirvana. Free and of decent quality.  I did not think Pure Music was worth the cost.  Decibel was pretty good too but I am not sure what they are charging for their player now.

There's another project running around the forum that's getting the same quality as the best of the paid solutions. It's called BetterSound. Right now it's free for alpha-testers. We'll see what the price goes to when it hits beta or stable release but for now it's free. :D

I use Clementine, works great for me. Really user friendly I think, and plays all my files (FLAC, ALAC, APE)

I just use iTunes and ALAC, although I haven't been in the situation where I have 1000s of FLAC files to convert.
