Different between Home Theater Receiver vs. Stereo Receiver

Thread Starter

I am not so clear about the different between the two like the title stated.  One of the most obvious different between the two is home theater receiver allow more than 2 channels vs only 2 channels on a stereo receiver.

I am looking at the Yamaha RX-V671 home theater receiver and the Yamaha R-S700/ or RX-797 stereo receiver.

If the stereo receiver has a good improvement over the home theater receiver, then that is what I will be considering.

Since I don't need any video features, mainly use the receiver to hook up to my computer.

Here is what I plan to setup:

Energy CB-20 bookshelf speakers > Receiver > HRT music streamer II DAC (not sure if this is a good idea, since this DAC have usb that hook directly into the pc, so I don't need a sound card).

If you don't need video based inputs/outs or 6 channels because you won't be using 6channel audio, then the stereo receiver is the better option, the HRT music streamer II DAC is fine for that set-up it's doesn't matter whether you have a sound card or not the HRT music streamer II will bypass it.
