"Dolby headphone" feature on Xonars. Xonar DG vs Xonar Essence ST with optical out.

My setup:

Optical cable

Little Dot Dac II

Little Dot MK III

HD650

I had a Xonar Essence ST some a year ago and I could remember I was pretty satisfied with the dolby headphone feature, for some games it was awesome (others not so).

Now I am wondering if I can get the same "quality" of dolby headphone feature with the 30 euro (inc. shipping) Xonar DG. I am using the optical out so I was thinking, it shouldn't make a difference between the two, but I thought it was a good idea to post it here before purchasing.

I have not tried the DG but on the DX / STX I don't think you can apply DH via optical, you can only output Dolby live and pro logic II (will confirm when I'm home)

with current drvers it limits Dolby headphone to Headphone out (STX) / front out (DX)

However the DH quality seemed to be the same with the xonar DX & STX.

I would get a DG just for DH gaming as the are cheap.  If you do go for the unified drivers as well

+1

I say the same but DH is a really shitty effect that sounds terrible. Don't know why you would even use it.

I'ts best used for gaming, Play Bad company 2 or other FPS game that outputs 5.1 audio with Dolby Headphone and it makes all of the difference with enemy positioning. The SQ does take a hit but if you play to win then this DH a must.

I also use it for any game which has 5.1 or 7.1 audio for the surround feel and added atmosphere, if you stick to DH1 mode with no added reverb the sound distortion is minimal.

With just music its not the best combination but it can remove the inside your head feel.

If you play to win then you would buy auzentech not asus...

and removing that inside of your head feel is actually probably you headphone's shitty soundstage

I thought showing respect to fellow head-fiers was a given , maybe its your shitty manners.

When you say Auzentech I assume you are talking about creative chipset HSTF \ CMSS-3D based sound cards cards. Some people prefer CMSS-3D but I personally think Dolby Headphone works better and does not color the sound as much as CMSS-3D.

Well it gives realism to the game you're playing with EAX and alchemy etc so pretty much, it's more useful as a gaming card.
