best <$100 sound card / DAC

Hello guys,

I am new to the forum and haven't dealt with audio before. I have a decent understand of electronics and most of the numbers you throw around.

I looked around on the forums and it seems like you one can purchase a sub $100 sound board, and change some filtering caps and opamps and get a reasonably good setup.

I am ideally looking for a USB solution but a PCI or a PCIe would be satisfactory as well.

I have no issues changing opamps or any other components and I have access to a variety of soldering and re-work equipment.

Take a look at the FiiO E7. AFAIK it is the best DAC in the price range you specified.

Yeah, the E7 is great if you just want a nice, cheap DAC/amp that also doubles as a portable amp.  Not exactly the most powerful amp out there though, but it should be fine for all but the most demanding headphones.

I got some cheap Samson SR850 headphones.

Would this be a proper fit quality wise?

I know the impedance of the headphones falls in the range of the amp.

The E7 should power the samson's easily since they have a quite low impedance.
