Total newbie. What cable to buy?

I found someone locally who is able to recable my headphones if I supply the parts.

I have a new pair of Sony MDR-V6s and can't stand the coiled cable. What straight cable should I buy? I'd like something inexpensive, durable and not too heavy as I carry these around with me all the time. Need about 4 feet or so.

Only use them with my MacBook and iPhone so I only need a 1/8" jack.

Thanks. Please explain to me as if this is my first time buying cable and jacks (because it is!).

Mogami mini star quad + neutrik jacks.

This is what I use on my D1001 and it works perfectly.

daleproaudio for jacks: (free shipping)

ebay for cable:

redco audio and markertek also sell the cable, but I am pretty sure that the ebay price is better after shipping.

EDIT: You also should get some heatshrink tubing. You can get that from daleproaudio as well, but it;s a bit expensive (though.. it might be there better price after shipping)

No it isn't the ebay price is a ripoff. Redco charges $0.78 per foot, and you'd have $4.41 spare for shipping. I highly doubt the ebay seller is shipping it using Priority, probably using First Class, which means he's overcharging already. Order the connectors at Redco as well, and I guarantee it'll end up being cheaper than buying all over the place. Redco has pretty much everything you need.

Ah. You're right.

The shipping from redco is alot cheaper than I thought.

I ordered my cable from markertek and they pretty much rape you with your shipping.

I was just giving him options. He can do the research himself.

I get what you're saying, sorry if I was a bit harsh in my post. Thing is, a lot of Head-Fiers are too lazy to do their own research (not saying the OP is lazy) and then ask the same questions over and over again, this is to prevent cluttering a useful forum.

Thanks for all the help.  The prices at Redco really are so inexpensive...

So if I was to order the parts from them, are these the right items?

I can't seem to find heatshrink or nylon multifilament sleeve at Redco... where would I order those from?

Awesome - thank you cyberspyder.

Looks like all the parts will cost under $5, not counting shipping.  Can you help me figure out what size sleeve and heatshrink I should get?

Is the cable listed here the right kind?  I'm hoping it will end up something like this...

Just wondering, Is Mogami Quad better or Canare Starquad L4S ? I remember reading Canare was cheaper and better.

There will be no difference and if then it will be subjective. I prefer Mogami because of the colours :)

He used four strands of silver plated copper hook up wire.

Probably from ebay seller navships.

You also probably don't want regular techflex because it'll cause (I forget the word, but you'll be able to hear it when you up against the cable.... alot) microphonics?

Look on ebay for the nylon microfilament stuff that won't do that.

I've heard it both ways..

I've used Mogami without any issues and so I'd recommend it.

But, I am sure Canare is will be sufficient as well.

Microphonics is the right word. and cable microphonic cables suck.

You can skip the sleeving altogether, it doesn't do much. While many prefer sleeving, I find that the bumpy surface of the sleeving causes more microphonics when moving the cable around as opposed to just having a smooth outer jacket.

x2

Mine doesn't have any sleeving and I have no issues.

But, it does make it look better.

My girlfriend wouldn't let me recable her headphones cause she hated the way mine turned out.

Aesthetics, yes. You will have to decide if form is worth more than function. Another plus to no sleeving: much easier to clean!
