Just a bit of fun... I have converted this old pair of HD25sp to open backs, fitted velour pads and re-cabled them. They sound much more open and airy with more detail.

Open backed HD25

It is indeed weird that a headphone designed to be close works good open. where did you get the back of the cups?

did the plastic cups had any sort of damping material inside, or was it solid plastic?

Yeh... They have a disk of felt type sound absorbing material in them

Inside the HD25

Perhaps try removing the felt or replacing it with something that's more open?

Yep. Not a bad idea... These were just a but of fun, made up of bits I had knocking around and some second hand SPs I picked up on the bay to test vs the HD25-1 and HD25-13. All the headphones I had were closed backed so I thought I would try this to get that open back feel without having to fork out an money.
