You are being too vauge. It really depends on the price range which manufacturers card I would recommend. It would also depend on your intended usage which one as well.

 

For example, I would recommend the Asus Xonar D2 series formusic & movies & possably gaming in the $150 range provided you didn't need a headphone amp built in.

 

I would recommend a Creative card or X-Fi based card from Auzentech for gaming at lower price ranges.

 

At the high end I like the Essense STX/ST cards but they are not built with home theatre in mind at all. They are for stereo  or stereo headphone listening with some gaming thrown in as an afterthought

I like the Asus Xonar DX ($80) over the Creative because the Xonar drivers are simpler and easier to fix over Creative drivers.

Also the Asus Xonar DG ($30) is so cheap for what it offers.
