Imperishable Night is definitely the easiest of the entire series (not counting Mountain of Faith with Marisa B).

So because it's the easiest it can't be good? I liked it the most music wise, and art wise. It was darker than the others (literally).

Cherry Blossom is always at the top of my list too though. I'd call either one my favorite, but Imperishable Night probably barely beats it out.

Mechanically, I liked Mountain of Faith more (at least, as far as standard Touhou style goes; otherwise, I'd be all over Great Fairy Wars).*

Musically, Imperishable Night has some of my favorite tracks ("Maiden's Capriccio ~ Dream Battle", "Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess", "Cinderella Cage ~ Kagome Kagome"), though Undefined Fantastic Object has "Fires of Hokkai".

Story-wise, I prefer Perfect Cherry Blossom because it's a far more tragic story than Imperishable Night.

*: Youmu is hecka fun to play in Ten Desires, though.

ETA: Lol, "Crystallize Silver" from Perfect Cherry Blossom just started playing on foobar.

I am actually a big fan of 12.3, shame that is FAR too easy.

From then on they're all pretty great. Favorite being Imperishable Night, and the fighters. Those fightan games are hilarious fun.

Dear $DEITY the beam spam....When was the last time I played this kind of shooter... Radiant Silvergun?

I always sucked at shooters.  The music is awesome though.  Too good actually.  Its slightly distracting.

More practice...

Beam spam? You don't know beam spam until you've faced down Keine-sensei. Or until you get CAVED by Keine-sensei.

And then there's Shou and Byakuren (AKA The Youchrist), who have curvy lasers.

And then, ofc., there's Lunatic difficulty...

(Remember: "Eeeehh? Maji? Easy modo? Kimoi~")

Don't worry, eventually you will be able to either:

Use the Force, and/or,

See into the Matrix.

Play lunatic from the very start. Since when do you intentionally train yourself/wire your brain to perform sub-par? ahahahahah

This lets you switch to normal to enjoy the music/pretty patterns without even thinking =P

One of my favourites with Luka singing.

Audio quality seems pretty bad at the 360p setting though, it's a little better at 480p.

Yup.  Shooters are for for the crazies...

EDIT:  You know, I think hard mode is for elementary school kids.  When I was 7 or 8 I could ace that kind of stuff.  Alas, my reflexes have atrophied...

Do, do, do do, do demo ii~, do demo ii desu yo~!

As my friend says-

"People play Ikaruga on Hard to train for Touhou on Normal.

People play Touhou on Lunatic to train for DoDonPachi on Normal."

So are all the ones past 6 pretty similar with the standard shoot-and-dodge-shoot-dodge sort of gameplay and not much else?  So far, Radiant SIlvergun is the only sort of shooter I've liked because it gives you like 6 different weapons at the same time and makes for more strategy than the route memorization of most shooters.  Are any of the newer ones like that?

If not I'll go back to Highly Responsive to Prayer because the gameplay is far more interesting.  Plain shooters are just boring to me no matter how much of a story you add between the shoot-and-dodge.

Each Touhou game from 6 onwards has a different mechanic, and different shot patterns for the playable characters.

6: Bog-standard. Nothing special.

7: Cherry power! And the supernatural border.

7.5: Fightan!

8: Human/Youkai team. Focusing shifts you over to your Youkai partner, which can do different things.

9: Split-screen competitive multiplayer danmaku.

9.5: Photography danmaku. Ayayayayaya Shameimaru takes pictures to clear levels! Your camera can also clear bullets.

10: Faith bar!

10.5: Moar fightan!

11: I'm actually not familiar with what Subterranean Animism does, I haven't played it as much as the others.

12: UFOs.

12.3: The most fightan! Is an expansion pack for 10.5 (or was it the other way around?).

12.5: More dankamu x photography. Hatatatatate Himekaidou makes her first appearance here.

12.8: Should've been 12.⑨, since this is Cirno's game. Cirno can freeze bullets.

You're friend's high. Touhou is harder than DoDonPachi (IMO). I can 1 cred DoDon (the more recent arcade releases anyway) on Hard (aka Arcade Standard), but still have Toho problems.

I laughed. Great description though.

TBH, the mechanical intricacy of the later Touhou games lies in the shot patterns of the boss fights, not in the basic shoot-and-dodge stuff. Figuring out the "right" way to dodge each spellcard is the real meat of the game. I mean, every shmup is essentially shoot-and-dodge if you boil it down. Even Ikaruga, and that's one of the most innovative shmups around.

Highly Responsive To Prayers plays like... Arkanoid/Alleyway/Breakout with some shmup stuff layered onto it, which is actually why I find it less fun.

Story of Eastern Wonderland is more like a danmaku game.

Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream is the predecessor (mechanically) to Phantasmagoria of Flower View, since they're both split-screen competitive multiplayer danmaku (a style which dates back to Twinkle Star Sprites at least).

Lotus Land Story is the first Touhou danmaku-style game to feature focus mode.

Mystic Square is, again, a bog-standard danmaku game, like how Embodiment of Scarlet Devil would be (except on PC-98 instead of Windows).

i feel at an awkward stance here. i love touhou and know some of the characters but i don't play the games. love the music videos and the 1 episode anime though.

I seem to be getting slightly better, though I'm probably going to lag behind the people who have clubs devoted to it for quite a while...
