i was rocking my Grado SR80s for about 3-4 years and really enjoyed them. After the cord broke for like the third time, i decided to try some other headphone manufacturers, and i have been really happy with the other sets i've gotten. I'm in love with both the Sennheiser HD555s and the Koss KSC75s. The Shure SRH440s sound quite good too, and are the best-built, but they are heavy compared to the other sets, so i don't wear them much.
as for the Grados, i dug them, and i'm not a metal-head.
There is nothing like a Grado, so if you love it, there is no substitute!
But having said that, I am in the process of acquiring a ESW10 because they are said to be a closed Grado RS1. I currently have the ESW9 and to me, they're a warmer closed version of Grado RS1, almost like a Grado RS1 with flats. I'm assuming the ESW10 will be like a Grado RS1 with bowls.

I think I will just get the ef2a since it includes a DAC as well and with a LD1+ I'd have to buy a udac. DId you have to construct it yourself? Do they come prebuilt? Thanks man for your time
Yay for Grado! Take it from me, if you are digging the 80i right now as much as you are, the 225i should be the tastiest dang thing you've ever had
Well this is fitting, a Grado thread (among the countless) and I just purchased my first set of Grados a couple minutes ago! I'm pretty damn excited since this is my first higher-end open headphone besides my beloved ksc 75s. I'm expecting the SR-225's from a fellow head-fier however, they've been modded using dampening material put on the drivers (dynamat I believe) and he/she said it helps with sibilance in the highs and it tames their aggression in that range. I was originally looking for an original, unmodded version but went for the plunge on the great price. So my questions are: does anyone have experience with this mod or a similar mod and if so, do you think I'll still experience that wonderful Grado 'tasty' flavor? :P
I'm gonna guess yes. While the highs are a definite factor in the Grado sound, its the ridiculous midrange thats so special IMHO. From what I have read you should be fine.
Yeah I hope the sound sig is not altered too much, but I'm not worried. Can't wait.
If the 225 is anything like the 225(i), you should be in for a treat. They sound phenomenal with all kinds of rock. Do you listen to rock?
Definitely - Nirvana, Hole, Chili Peppers, INXS, Depeche Mode, you name it I listen to it.
I listen to all genres so I'm excited to hear how these sound with any of them but yeah, can't wait to especially hear guitars and vocals on these.
Sweetness. Let us know what you think once you get 'em!
Absolutely!!

You should just go for a used RS-1 (or maybe HF-1/2)
. It really does improve on everything in the lower models and since you'll end up there anyways it will be cheaper to just skip everything in between. Funny thing, I was trying out an HE-500 last week and my wife preferred the RS-1..
