CMoy?

Hi,

Im new and just looking to buy a Cmoy amp to use with my ipod.

Just noticed them on Ebay and also at JDS labs.  Not sure which one to buy. Dont really need any extra bass but are there specific components i should be looking for?

Looking at the Alessandro or M50 headphones to use with a ipod classic. My music would be alternative rock, nothing too heavy. Also, needing a LOD.

Are the Fiio ones alright or would it be better to buy something else, suggestions?

Thanks. i love the forum. Came here looking for headphones and found so much moreregular_smile%20.gif

If you want to use LOD then JDS Cmoy will suit your needs..

John Seaber can customize the Cmoy for better perfomance..

Read the info in the spoiler,it is from his website..

Can the cMoyBB be customized? How?

Yes, the cMoyBB can be custom built upon request to match your headphones. To request free customization, please mention your headphones during checkout as shown in the image at right. Customized orders may delay shipment by 1 business day.

Customization is strongly recommended for low impedance headphones (32 ohms and below), such as Grados and most in-ear-monitors (IEM's/earbuds). We adjust over 10 components to optimize the amplifier's gain, bass boost, input attenuation, and ground circuitry to best match your specific equipment. There is no need to contact us in advance. We will automatically make all beneficial adjustments based on your order notes.

The cMoyBB is built by default to work well with any audio signal, including headphone output signals and line-level signals. If you plan to use a line-output adapter (LOD) cable, please mention this fact as well as your headphones during checkout. LODs produce a very strong signal which may require additional attenuation.

Thank you Optimus.

Just checked out Johns website but noticed that he uses the 2227 chip primarily.

He has a few other options but none that i have heard too highly recommended here.

Is there anyplace i can purchase these or anyone here who makes them with a better chip. Ie Ad8397. If i contacted John could he perhaps do a better chip for me for some extra money?

Thanks

I  am afraid that John won't change the chip...

But you can get  LM4562 and change it yourself,it is a nice sounding chip and cheap..

It has more warmer sound than the stock and not so tight and dry bass..

Also you can get more if you like to experiment from the following shop..

Just noticed you have a couple yourself. Which chip do you like the best and did you build them yourself? Also, how do they compare to the E5?

Thanks for the help smile.gif

The Bass Boost Cmoy that i have is from JDS Labs..

It is very proffesionally build and i like it very much.

The other one is made from a head.fi member.

His name is Howard and you can find him on ebay as fred_fred_2004.

I really can't compare none of my Cmoy's with E5.

It is like comparing a Ferrari with a Fiat...

Powerful homemade amps with no distortion and nice sound(depends on your taste as you can change the chip.)

I enjoy  LM4562 but i will put OPA2604 on a test next week to see if i like its sound better...

hello optimus p have read your headfi reply and have noticed you mention fred fred(howard) i use a cmoy made by big science geek,i have used this for about 3 years along with sony d-e340 pcdp and sennheiser px100 phones.i have just seen the ebay ad for fred fred and looked at his shop and discovered how many cmoy designs they make,i am interested in the one with three 2200uf caps.would you by any chance know anything about these.i am retired so although i would love to buy an esoteric h/phone amp i cant afford them but cmoys are inexpensive   thanks madnanny1

The JDS Labs CMoy is a great little amp. Powers all of my cans well, really shines with the Alessandros and A700s. The bass boost is a fun thing, if i had the choice I'd have it turned down a little, but it's too much fun to hook up some portapros, switch it on, and let an unassuming bystander listen evil_smiley.gif If i want more bass I usually use Foobar's or rockbox's EQ.

As for those can choices, both are excellent, I own the MS1i and can tell you they are great for personal listening, but do not isolate well enough for portable. And the M50's have a cult following here on head-fi. I suggest trying to audition them both, if you can.

I believe that an change of opamp makes more of a difference than buying a new cmoy. BSG cmoy are as professional as the JDS labs, so it would be sort of a lateral move. While fred_fred often has more interesting designs. Personally I wouldn't think that pairing a px100 with a larger caps cmoy would be a significant increase in sound quality. In fact, your best upgrade might be some new headphone.

hello nagasaki kid

thank you for your reply, yes you may be right about new phones, but i have had expensive h/phones in the past ie top of the range sennheisers.unfortunately my ears are very sensitive to pressure and have been using px100s for at least 5/6 years and love them. my very very favourite headphone is no longer made. it was a portable h/phone made by nad sold in the 80s the sound to me at least was out of this world sadly i have never seen it offered on ebay. what would you reccommend in headphones? remember my sony pcdp would probably not be considered state of the art,but i love it.would love to buy one of the older sony pcdps but all my music is on cdrw discs so these would probably not play on these machines and they are expensive to buy on the of chance that they may work   madnanny1

I'm not sure if you bought your CMOY yet but I have used BSG Cmoy (on ebay) with good result. It has dual gain (I do not know of any other with that) so you can change between high or low depending on your headphone. It's worth checking out!

Mine is having some issues after not being used for a while but that is a whole another story.
