Superlux HD-668B v Sony MDR V6 v Superlux HD-681 (Advice required) - Page 2

I definitely experienced way more bass (and better) in the HD681 vs the 668B

But those 681's were modded by Frans de Gruyter (rockgrotto)

Gear mentioned in this thread:

according to solderdude from rockgrotto (who seems to really know his stuff):

"HD668 is the most Neutral one with softer highs and no exaggerated bass.

HD681 (red) has much deeper bass (somewhat exaggerated but never bloated or annoying) and if unmodded sometimes piercing/fatiguing highs.
When modded the HD681 (to me) has a bigger 'fun factor' (because of the deep bass and shiny highs)
Mids are not as good as HD668B

HD681B (Balanced) has less bass then the red one and has about the same amount of bass as the HD668B
(that's why both have the B behind it)

HD681F (Flat) has even less bass then the B version.

All HD681's need to be modded to sound good.
unmodded they are acceptable if you like exaggerated detail/highs.
The HD668B sounds good without modding.

All have the same terrible plastic (vinyl) sweaty earpads.
Try to replace these with AKG velours pads if you can.
Better comfort and slightly better sounding as well."

so, if he's correct, the B in HD-681B does not mean "bass"....it means "balanced".

this website seems to back him up:

but to me its confusing because on with the HD668B model, the B seems to stand for stands for enhanced bass.   arrghhhh!

I think B stand for Balanced or Bass doesn't matter. We all know 668B is not bass heavy.
