Any current portable sources that support gapless FLAC?

Thread Starter

Hey everybody,

I am using a Cowon J3 that supports playing gapless flac files (I have a lot of music that have transitions between songs).  I have been a Cowon user since the D2 started gapless support.  I was wondering if there were any other brand players currently available (HiFiMan, etc.) that support gapless flac?

Thanks!

Searching the forum didn't really help much.  I saw a lot of references to gapless, but usually "player X doesn't support...".  I did see that there were a couple Sandisk Sansa players that supported it, but was wondering if there were more.  Does anyone know if any of the Chinese players do?

Thanks again.

Sony, Sansa, Cowon, Apple, Samsung, Archos, MS Zune,...ALL do lossless. You really didn't look to hard, and most didn't respond because we get this same question in a few threads a few times a week.

I think you misunderstand...I was concerned with lossless yes, however, gapless lossless playback is a bit more of a challenge.  Listening to motion picture soundtracks where the music segues seamlessly from one track to the next is where gaps are painfully obvious.

I know Apple supports gapless playback, but I am a ABA (Anything But Apple) person.  I have several Cowons that play gapless flac and they sound great, but I was looking to see if the rest of market caught up yet so I could evaluate alternatives.

Thanks for the help though!

No, I don't think I misunderstood - I think you failed to be clear about what you wanted as far as recommendations are concerned. The title is confusing to say the least.

And the players I mentioned, apart from the experience you've had with what you own/ed, ALL do GAPLESS!!! I've owned them, and they all worked perfectly for me. And they weren't all Apple devices.

Take care, & good times to you.

I'm not going to turn this into a urinary Olympic competition, but please tell me what about the title isn't clear?

Apple doesn't and never will support flac, I mentioned Sansa in my follow-on post and I indicated that I already owned a Cowon player.

Please, for my edification, point out what wasn't clear?

Tactfully yours,

P.S. - If you treat new posters in this forum like you are treating me, it's a wonder anyone ever posts more than once.

I'm all but certain that a rockboxed Sansa Clip+ or Fuze supports gapless FLAC playback.

Thanks!  That helps a lot.  Do you own any Sansa products?  I was interested in comparing their sound quality to Cowon.  Cowon's products are going into some weird directions lately and I wanted a portable source that I could use with my home system as well as on the road.

Unfortunately, I do not own either Sansas or a Cowon.  However, I'm sure many people here will recommend the Sansas as well - they're known for their reasonable price and good sound quality. If you install Rockbox on them they have EQ and gapless support, last time I checked.  Not to mention they're so cheap you can hardly go wrong.  Of course, you shouldn't expect them to perform as well as a purpose-built audiophile DAP that costs many times more, but they're pretty good for a consumer product from what I understand.

Also, while it's not "current" yet, the new Fiio X3 will support gapless FLAC playback as well.  If you are willing to wait, you might want to check that out too.

Thanks for the feedback!  I'll check into the Fiio X3 and see if it's worth waiting for.  I guess I have been looking for a "poor man's DAP".  That's what my Cowon J3 is serving as right now.

I appreciate the help.

UPDATE: I checked into the Fiio X3 and it looks pretty impressive.  I guess I will wait.  Thanks again!

I've got both. If you don't use EQ's or enhancements, then the Clip+ or Fuze sound a little bit better than Cowons....add in the EQ/enhancements on the Cowons, and the Rockbox EQ on the Sansas, and they're really close, and it simply becomes a matter of taste(like if you prefer the Cowon's BBE, etc.) I routinely use my  rockboxed Clip+ both with my headphones, both EQ and no EQ(depending on headphones involved), and used with a stereo or boombox's auxiliary input, in that case with EQ disabled and volume maxed.....works like a charm and fits in the palm of your hand.

Cool!  Thanks for the impressions!  I thought it might come down to Cowon and Sansa.  After further research, I think I will stick with my J3 and see how the Fiio X3 turns out.
