samples to test my ear

Hello,

i tried to make same blind tests with foobar and I was able to detect a difference between flac and 200 VBR aac files.

But I'm not that sure I wasn't just lucky because it was really hard at times and not always I heard a difference.

Are there some uncompressed sounds on the web (like cymbals) dedicated to make audiophile these tests or the best songs to use?

I mainly wanna see if I hear a difference now with the cx300 and with new brainwavz m1 I'm gonna receive (which are supposed to be much better)

What track were you using ?

To reduce the impact of lucky guessing do many many trials, how many did you do ? 10 is an aboslute minimum, 14 or 20 is better, how many times did you get it right, a p of < 0.05 is a minimum standard for reliability

Some tracks are harder to encode than others , if a track peaks at a very high level , close to or even at 0db then encoding often leads to clipping which is audible, harpsichord, and trumpet are notoriously difficult to encode - trumpet harmonics go beyond 50K , you might also like to try a new Lame such as 3.98 which is pretty good.

The only track I can reliably detect a difference between wav and mp3 (Lame 3.98) on is "Nobody wants to" by Crowded House it peaks at 0db on the source repeatedly and the encode clips frequently but that is an extreme case (I hope)

I tried various tracks like "st patrick's day" by john mayer.

anyway I tried your track, I cant hear any difference, I'll try when I receive the new headphones. What bitrate did you use for the mp3 encoding?

VBR 0 - Lame 3.98 - with my HD580s the clipping on the MP3 is quite pronounced - enough to get 20/20 in a DBT - perhaps your encoder is better ?

I tried AAC nero 1.5.4 -q 0.55 but I'm using a "crappy" hp + integrated sound card. I doubt its the same thing :D
