Perhaps you could get one of the headphone amps that have a preamp out put and use it to power a power amp for speakers. Over at Headroom (headphone.com) they have some dedicated headphone amps with preamp out.

Isn't it about $800 for the base HeadRoom unit that has a pre-amp out? Might be a bit steep for someone considering $250 speakers.
I have thought about the Zamps but they seem like they're kind of big. Aren't they a normal rack size?
I'm not worried about finding a pre-amp. My Little Dot mk III makes for a great preamp, and I currently use it in that regard for my existing computer speakers.
I've all but settled on the Maverick Audio A1. I'm watching the for sale forum to see if one comes up in the next month or so, and if that doesn't happen, I'll go ahead and order one. If the headphone amp on the A1 isn't as good as my LD, I'll just keep both.

I will soon be moving my Audioengine P4s to my office and I will need something to power them. Ideally I could get an amplifier with a very good headphone amp to power my DT880/250 phones. Currently that job is being performed by a Little Dot mkIII. I don't have a whole lot of desktop real estate available, so one unit to do both jobs would be best. A quality built-in DAC would be a bonus, and I'd like to keep it below $400. No real preference between tube and solid state.
So far on my list:
-Maverick Audio Tube Magic A1
-Musical Paradise MP-301 mk2
Anyone have any opinions on these two units vs. each other? Anyone know of any units I'm forgetting? I've intentionally left the Audioengine N22 off because I've read the headphone amp isn't all that great on that unit.
I'm interested in this thread since I have a similar question. I've been using the audioengine N-22 amp with the P-4 speakers and the combination works well for a desktop. The N-22 amp stays very cool and takes up little space. It also has a pretty decent headphone amp. It has no problem driving my Beyer DT880 (250 ohm) cans; they can drive 600 ohm cans as well (or at least that is what the manufacturer informed me in an e-mail). For $200 for the amp, that leaves $200 for a dac (the Music Streamer II runs $150 and I really like it).
That said, I'm thinking of getting a different amp. No real complaints about the N-22 but I'd like something with more oomph and perhaps with a tuner as well. But I'd definitely want something with a good headphone amp as well.
