AKG K3003 High End 3 Way System Headphone - Page 83

I think I might just be the first few who doesn't like the K3003. Sure it has a revealing signature making me hear stuff clearly like never before. But it's also very shouty for some reason where everything just comes and bombard at you.

The highs was already on the high side for me so I didn't try the high filter and the bass filter was too Bassy for my tastes. I didn't bother going into greater detail like soundstage etc. as there's no point when the sound signature isn't of my preference.

TL;DR: the sound signature was a little fatiguing for me.

^   Coming from the W4 as your reference, I'm not surprised.

True. The W4 has a more laid back and relaxing sound signature, I also like the UM Miracles (a laid back CIEM) but I can't get them due to some personal reasons. So I guess my sound signature is slightly leaning towards a laid back presentation but you can say that I'm kind of looking at a balance between a laid-back and engaging signature.

You may want to check out the IE800's or 1+2's then... I'd be tempted to recommend the SE846's too, but haven't tried those yet, so I won't. I should have them in 3 days so I'll PM you if anything.

IE800 and 1p2 are not quite laid back IEMs IMO.

True, but coming from the K3003's they're both more bassy and overall "warmer" and more engaging musically.

If looking for laid-back and engaging (which is sort of contradictory in a way), the TG334! are probably the best bet. Don't know why that slipped my mind.

No 1p2 I can try here so not taking the risk and I tried the IE800 and the highs were pretty sibilant IMO and the fit was awful so I passed it. I am actually looking to FitEar Paterre, 111 and also maybe the shure models.

I am a newbie and only dove into this world of headphones about a year ago.

All I want to say is that I am a proud owner of K3003 and I am very happy with it, and I use it mostly with my iPhone 4S. The sound is revealing, detailed, balanced, and non-fatiguing.

I enjoy various genres of music except metal. And with the reference filter I feel the K3003 makes everything sounds amazing, especially the violin. Excuse my not-so-audiophile language but I feel the violins and cellos shine like silver with the K3003.

With bass-heavy tracks, the amount of bass is 'just right' for me, without creeping into the mids. It is just so balanced, yet impactful.

I don't hear any 'incoherence'. This is a none-issue for me. Maybe it is due to my inexperience with headphones or IEMs. But I do have confidence with my ears though.

I don't have much experience with other headphones or IEMs, and I purchased the K3003 after reading various reviews, as I don't have much money, but I also want the best UIEM. I was considering other TOTL UIEMs like IE800, SE 846, even TG334. With no chance of demoing any of them, I took this great leap of faith by purchasing the K3003. And I am glad I did.

Agreed on the TG334. Wouldn't recommend the 1plus2 though, their highs are actually a tad more aggressive and less laid-back than the K3003's.

You're right about the 1+2, it's more v-shaped, so more bass and more highs presence than the AKG. I'm not a fan of that iem personally, but I can see how many would like its more dynamic and exciting sound.

When did you hear the 1Plus2's?

YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY.

This may come as a surprise to you, but you are not the first! For example, check out the review section, or read this thread from the beginning.

For great many reasons the K3003 is my preferred IEM. With the right track I think it's so good I find it hard to imagine or wish for anything else or better. However, that doesn't mean I prefer it with every single track in my collection. As a matter of fact, far from it!

For example:

Kool & the Gang - Jungle Boogie (High quality MP3)

Right in the beginning of this track, listen to the bass drum, and then a little later the (male) voices. Listening to this track with the FitEar ToGo 334 the sound, especially the bass drum, really hits me as it should. The sound feels set and (now I will use a word which I never use to describe IEMs, but I’ll make an exception this time) visceral. This track sounds great with the K3003 too, but the TG334 and this track feels like a match made in heaven. It’s just oh so groovy!

Here is another example (one of my all-time Paul McCartney favourites).

Wild Life from the album Wild Life with Wings (iTunes sample).

Now Paul McCartney has a rather bright voice, but here he sings pretty hard and add to that after (I assume) having had a lot to smoke (cigarettes, I presume…) and the TG334 makes that voice sound eerily real and forward, just as it should. It’s outstanding! Also, with this track the treble extension of the hi-hats on the K3003 unfortunately becomes a little too much for my ears. I don’t know why this is so but I guess the recording perhaps wasn’t mastered as well as it could have been?!

So, that was two examples of where I don’t prefer the K3003. So, finally here is an example where the K3003 shines divinely and outperforms the TG334 to such an extent I find it hard to believe they’re manufactured on the same planet.

The Night Before from the album Help! with The Beatles (High quality MP3)

With the K3003 the presentation is so vivid I can easily envision the “fab four”, it gives me goose bumps, I forget about time, and I can’t help sing along, dance and help Ringo with the drum set while we smile at each other. I enjoy every bit of sound on this track and the rhythm guitar in the right channel just makes it impossible to be still, and every bit of sound is portrayed perfectly by the K3003. In contrast this track sounds a bit dark and dull with the TG334.

So, if I may give you an advice, don’t set your mind to an opinion to early. Your brain (and possible the dynamic bass driver?) might just need a bit of burn in.

A friend of mine owns it, I tried it a bit less than two months ago in June, and only compared it with the k3003 head to head at the time.

He just auditioned the K3003s (along with other IEMs, apparently) in a shop, he doesn't own a pair.
