New car deck, Need an mp3 player for it

So I am getting a new head unit for my car, a sony cdx-gt740, and I would really like a decent music player to keep all my music with me. I really want something that will store my mass of music with plenty of room to spare as it is constantly growing. Currently nothing is in flac so that isnt a huge need. I already have a little over 25gb of music and I want to be able to carry that all with me. I would like something larger than 32gb as I think I will fill that up too soon and it doesnt really need to do anything other than play music. I would also like something without a touchscreen. I was thinking about getting a used 6th gen ipod since i can get a used one for about $100 but I have a 4th gen that the hard disc is too messed up to use and a 5th gen that needs a new logic board. (also the 6th gen ui looks stupid, I dont need artwork that is precious space, I wish i could change that to the old setup) Since apples customer service seems to have plummeted over the years it makes me wary of their products. The older zunes seem nice but are too expensive from what I can tell. Also the one advantage an ipod has is i dont have to use proprietary bloatware.

So the important things:

Large storage built in >30gb, bigger the better and I would prefer not to have to expand it myself

Decent UI, I like the ipod UI and the creative zen micro ui something that I could use while driving the ipod click wheel is very easy to use

Decent battery life, 20+hrs? I hate having to plug in seventy different things

Good SQ without having to do to much modding

Not a fan of touchscreen

Just has to be small enough to fit in my pocket, so not the size of a dvd case(although i can carry those in my pocket biggrin.gif)

Almost forgot price! ~$100 maybe a little more but not too much. I dont care if its used.

I dont know what makes an mp3 player good for car use. The head unit can bypass ipod dac(if i buy a special cable and then only 6th gen can be controlled on the player which is stupid) and has headphone line in and aux in in the back which i think is for rca plugs, dont know which would sound better. I also plan on streaming pandora and satellite to it over my droid when im not using my player.

And I dont have good headphones for it right now but thanks to the awesomeness of HeadFi im pretty sure I want some ATH-M50 but I probably wont use an external amp as I am poor and this already kinda breaks the bank.

Thanks guys I know you get alot of these sort of requests but there really isnt anyplace for a better answer imo!

That used iPod looks like your best bet. iPod Classic right?

x2. It also looks like that head unit will support an iPod right out of the box. I use an 80gb iPod classic with my Alpine head unit, and it's working out pretty good! smily_headphones1.gif

Yea I see 120gb classics on craiglist regularly around here for about that price. Should I use the rca outs in the back or go with the usb control cord? Will there be a difference in sound quality between the two?

If you haven't got the Sony yet, /////Alpine has an iPod transport, meaning, no CD Drive, but has a 3" display instead to better navigate an iPod's content. Think of it as a Wadia 170i with its own DAC.

And if you feel like joining the DIYMA online forum, you can get the PXA-H100. This one will turn the X305 above into a pure transport like the Wadia, and apply more DSP features than what you can get out of the X305. For example, it has a digital active crossover and time alignment feature, meaning you need at least five channels of amplification to separately power tweeters, mids, and a woofer, but it can split up the proper frequencies for each transducer, and ultimately, apply microseconds of time delay to the ones closer to you (like the driver's side tweeter followed by the midrange vs the passenger side, then all the front vs the sub in the back, so ultimately once set-up just right it's simulating a center position with a sub that's a little bit closer to the front.
