Looking for satisfying portable setup.

Thread Starter

Hello all, I am in the market for the best possible audio setup, that I can take with me. The main problem is I cannot seem to find one that will not require some kind of major sacrifice (little things I do not mind), such as low battery life, poor build construction, or buggy UI.

I very nearly settled on the Cowon X7 but have read many troubling things about the UI, not just being buggy but undependable. The Cowon J3 also looked good, but I have heard of poor build quality and also would think the X7 sounds better, if any one could shed light on that I would be grateful. I also looked at the Hifiman HM-601, and have heard of issues with the build, namely that it can just break down. Lastly I have heard good stuff about Red Wine modded iPods, and know they would be durable but are kind of pricey.

I would also want to buy an amp, probably a Minibox-D, if I can find one, unless anyone has a suggestion. Finally, for those DAPs I mentioned I would like to know how concerned about an amp I should be, I understand the Hifiman has one built in so I should not have to buy one in that case. I currently own Shure SRH840's and love them but are considering switching to something a tad more portable, still full size but a tad sleeker maybe. Have had my eyes on the Monster Beats Studios, I have heard the build is much better than the Pros, but am not aware of the sound quality (am aware they are kind've the Ipod of headphones). I would be spending in the range of $350, with priority being the DAP, would like to get an amp if I am able though.

Thanks to anyone who even reads this wall of text, let alone answers all that,

Manny.

I've got a Cowon quite a few years ago (was called iAudio then), very nice sound quality IMO. Don't know how they are doing recentlybiggrin.gif

If you are looking for Hifiman DAP, I think they have built-in headphone amps, well, that might be good or bad, you might just don't like the "taste" of their amp.
