Between two cans (slightly unconventional)

Now this is difficult because it doesn't strictly fit into this category but i'm trying to decide between two headphones, one full size one IEM

The two i'm deciding between are the etymotic hf5 and the audio technica ath-m50

It's for general use and some degree of noise isolation is required because i travel quite a bit and I listen to a wide variety of genres.

Anyway i'm aware that the hf5 will isolate sound better than the ath's but how much would i be losing in sound quality if i went for the IEM option?

Thanks.

The  hf5s will be much better for you seeing as you said you travel a lot. IEMs are a lot easier to carry around and store on the go compared to full size headphones, especially the m50s. Even if the two are totally different in terms of sound, if you travel a lot the small differences won't matter so much as you won't really be able to focus on the song, unless you specifically like the sound signature of one over the other.

I'll say try em out if you can, the etymotic fit, while good, can be uncomfortable for some.

People say the HF5 are about 90% of the ER4P, and the ER4P rapes my HD25-1 (which is comparable to M50). So I think you won't lose any sound quality if you go the IEM route. And you'll LOVE the isolation when on the go.
