I am at a loss to understand why the art of sound seems to be a waning fad. If you have noticed even best buy's audio section is down to 1 or 2 aisles of speakers and recievers. I live in a small town and have no audio/video stores here but I have more fun looking in thrift stores and yard sales than buying something new. I am also satisfied with my current gear. There seems to be a supply of audio fans with some disposable income with the online shops seeming to be doing alright...selling $1500 cables...lol. I get some folks over and they are amazed at the sound that comes from my 2 channel setup but they still seem to be happy with thier surround sound in a box system...oh well!

I know exactly why it's a waning fad.

The iPod.

Senor Revo is absolutely correct, Convenience >> Quality in the eyes of most consumers.

Indeed.

There was once a time where McIntosh was a household name, and not as a personal computer. A time when Hi-Fi ads were in every magazine and every city had at least one record store, where people who knew and loved music would congregate.

In a way, I kind of welcome the new wave of Skullcandy and Beats headphones. They are, if nothing else, leading consumers to be more interested in the audio quality of their iPods, rather than only replacing their headphones when they break.
