using cd recorder as dac

Is it possible to use a cd recorder as a dac - it has  optical in and an analog out?  I'm wondering because the drives break and they might have nice stuff as far as the internals - CDR631_back.jpg

like this marantz is on ebay for 60 bucks right now.  I just don't know if it would work or if it would be a good idea. The eventual use would be pulling a digital feed from an ipod and exporting it to a set of rotel seperates.

If you have an input monitor function, yes.
