I'm on a roll with these pad mods. Anyway, all I did was purchase some extra Beyerdynamic velours from their site, took one of them, cut it in half and Krazy Glued it to the top portion of the stock AD700 pads. Unbelievable!!!
Let me tell you, I've had many comfortable headphones (DT880 and 990 in particular), but this takes the cake from all of them. These have absolutely no equal for comfort with this mod. These have zero pressure on all sides. Putting them on... Seriously feels like nothing at all!
The sound has no cons, just pro's. Soundstage feels 20% bigger, highs feel a little smoother, and the mids are still just as lush as before. There also seems to be a bit more bass presence too. This mod is definitely for those (like myself) that found the AD700's driver touching the ears (causing pain in comparison to a papercut - that annoyingly intensifies as well) and/or as well felt the bottom portion of the pads pressing moderately on the bottom jaw - creating mild, but irritating discomfort. Placing the pads in this specific manner reduces the angle dramatically and far more evenly spreads the weight of the cups around the head. Needless to say, the above discomfort quibbles mentioned above disappear permanently with this mod.
I also found the AD700's pad material to be a little itchy. So I also took the felt lining from the Beyer pads (meant for the driver covers on their models), cut them into slabs and glued that to the bottom portion of the cups. No itchin' like a mosquito bite. This mod doesn't have to be permanent either, you can try it out without glue or any other adhesive yourself. Just carefully line up the semi-portions and put them on.
I call it the "Semi-Cush" mod.
