Well, if the magazine is correct, I'm slightly more interested because they stayed with the general neutralish-but-slightly-bright route that I like about AKG. Wonder when they'll be released in the US.

Well, if the magazine is correct, they'd be on the same level as the monster beats pro's. IF that were correct, I wouldn't even give these a try given the chance.

More plausible would be that the magazine reviewers just haven't the slightest clue about accurate music reproduction.

They may scale it based on enjoyability rather than utmost music reproduction. The Pros are pretty fun headphones, but certainly frighteningly inaccurate.

Checked the said magazine with its headphone comparison at the airport yesterday... They gave each headphone a star rating from 1 to 5 as well. The K550s got 2 stars. Porta Pros got 5. LCD-2 got 3.

@Ishcabible

Completely disagree. Fun for me equals the ability to sit back and enjoy the music completely and stress free. In other words, I don't have to pinch to distinguish notes or get used to huge coloration/bloom. But what goes as "fun" here helps me to keep away from such cans, which is nice :)

Guess it depends on the taste in music as well. I'm a jazz, fusion, prog, rock kinda guy... And when the headphone is called out to play everything accordingly in harmonically, rhythmically and melodically rich music, that's where phones such as the Beats fail miserably. Ergo: no fun.

K272HD is a very fun phone for me. If these were an even upgrade to them rather than a 'sidegrade', I'd be very happy.

It's the same case for me (I wouldn't have a DT48 and be saving up for a W11JPN--yeah okay those are pretty colored, but tastefully--if I was interested in just a totally unrealistic sound), but for most consumers, a fun sound is a colored sound--I mean, look at the amount of people with M50's!, and the magazine would much rather please the rest of the world than impress a small group of people; it doesn't seem to be a Stereophile...but if they got an LCD-2 and a preproduction headphone, they must hold some prestige. It's still rather upsetting that the Pros are ranked so high when they have the technical ability of the M50's though, but whatever gets more readers...

The K271 is a load of fun to everyone that's tried my pair actually. It must be the mids. biggrin.gif They've even impressed some metalheads. I can't wait to see a legitimate review of them.

... The star rating is NOT for sound quality or comfort...

The star rating is just plain and simple a "price-performance ration" rating... (German: "Preis-Leistung")

This explains why the Porta Pros got 5 of 5 (great bang for the buck)

Duh, you think? :)

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed in "high-fidelity" magazines today and listeners in general. Even though 99% of the consumers are uneducated listeners, I hope the hifi media would have an interest to educate them and not pour poop into their mouths. Problem is that people listen to sound, not music, in most cases. Music is simply a tool to evaluate each one's new toys. You go through your favorite records and tracks and move onto the next toy... Such consumerism :(

Material > culture in today's world.

And I still think you can get a better bang for the buck than Porta pro's. AKG K514s are tons better and similarly priced.

I think the M50 is a better headphone than the K271 and more neutral as well....  though I did like the K271 with velours when I heard that combo at a meet.

I'm not buying these unless the guy in the bathtub is famous.  I don't care what he does or if what he does sux, as long as he's famous, I'm on board!  Let's cross our fingers that he's Brad Pitt's long lost son or something.

Some random guy in a bathtub isn't classy enough for you?

Well he is pretty sexy.  But I don't care how huge his forearms are, it's no substitute for fame.
