Guide me, audiophiles!

Hi, I'm a newbie into the hi-fi world of sound. I recently bought my first pair of decent headphones, philips shp8900. I am really impressed so far with the desktop quality with again, my also recently bought decent-ish soundcard. However, when it comes to plugging them into my PSP slim when outdoors, I feel like taking it out of my pocket and slamming it into the ground... It's THAT unsatisfying. Basically, I need your experience and advice on what portable player I should buy. My budget is laughable, but I'm willing to sell my psp along with my 8gb and 16 gb mem sticks and give up on gaming if necessary. If I have to draw conclusions from my own research, I should go for some nice Cowon player but since I like to play my music on max volume, and the max output in Cowon players is 16 ohm, while in my headphones it's 32, I'm not sure if that would be the best option. (please correct me if i'm speaking out of my arse here)  Help me, please! smile.gif

Cowons are great players! SQ is up there as far as portables go. I have an S9 and i'm running 64 ohm headphones (re0) and it sounds fine unamped at about half the volume. Even better amped. Plenty of volume for me. That's the other thing if you're unhappy with the volume coming from the player you can always amp it, but in y our case with a 32 ohm headphone it should be fairly easy to drive and should be easily driveable by the cowon. My recommendation for a Cowon would be the J3 or S9 depending on what you are looking for.

If you really want something that's cheap, with good sound quality, go for the Sansa Clip+.  Many people here swear by these, or the Sansa Fuze, which is a little more expensive.

There is no need to sell your gear to buy a DAP.

Clip and fuze has already been rec'd and I'd second that.

Alternatively look at the FS section of headfi for a bunch of quality players that will ALL drive your phones.
