Recommendations for 2 DAC purchases

Hello all,

Let me start by apologizing if this question has been answered elsewhere - I've read extensively and not found a definitive answer for my situation.

I need to purchase 2 DAC's sometime in the next week or so.

a) One will be for use with a pair of Swan T200b active speakers which are currently on their way. My budget is around $200. Assuming the speakers sound similar to their little brother the M200MkIII, they should have a somewhat warm, tubey sound signature so I will be looking for something fairly neutral and detailed to balance this out. I do not need an integrated headphone amp, or many input methods. I only require either a coaxial or optical input, as it will be fed exclusively from a Squeezebox Touch.

b) The other will be for a Hifiman EF5/HE-5LE rig. I absolutely love this setup, but unfortunately the DAC I'm currently using (TC-7520) must return to the living room. I am considering budgeting $300; does this seem reasonable considering the components I'm dealing with? Again, I do not want or need a headphone amp integrated, and I would like it to have USB connectivity for use with my PC. I have been quite pleased with the TC-7520, and if it would be possible to improve upon its performance in terms of detail and midrange warmth within this price range I would be thrilled.

And both DAC's MUST be able to handle 24/96 files, as I have many of them.

Anyhow, please throw any and all suggestions my way!

TIA,

Adrian

bump. Any help?

Go for a Maverick Audio D1 for your Swans. It's $200, and handles 24/96.

I'm sure you know about the huge D1 thread and the FAQ.

A lot, including myself, like the D1.

Bought a Maverick D1 and an HLLY SMK-III. Thanks for the help. I'm looking forward to them. I'll post impressions when I get them if anyone says they're interested.

Why did you buy both? The D1 accepts Coax, and Optical in. The DAC in the D1 accepts 24/96. Do you not have a sound card that outputs Coax/Optical?

They're for two different rooms in my house. I have separate systems in my bedroom, living room and tv room.

mmmmmm.....x1. for an even great VDAC experience, i did the 'short'd' output caps mod plus a SLA battery psu. now its mmmmmmmmmmm............mmmmmmmmm.............mmmmmmm experience! LOL. to my ears, the USB experience is equivalent to the optical spdif so take it for what its worth.

O & i too am listening via mod VDAC > vintage Sansui amp > HE5LE & alls i can says Mikey Likes...very much so much so my next dac upgrade will be something in the likes of an Anedio D1, Lavry D11 or equivalent which btw are all in the many multiples $$$$ of a VDAC.
