HELP A HEADFIER OUT! Clip+RB/M50s

Hey everyone.

I need help with my settings for my Clip+. I've been getting some distortion on a few of my songs, all of them from good sources: Soundcloud, iTunes and Beatport. The reason I'm not posting in the RB forums is because I know I have better chance of someone understanding here. Anyway, here are the settings I've messed with:

Volume : -16 db to -20 db

Treble: 3 db

Bass: 3 db

Replay Gain Type: Shuffling

Prevent Clipping: Yes

Shuffle: Yes

Those are the only settings I've messed with because the others I don't really here a difference or just don't understand them.

Thanks, Cykull

i have never used replay gain, so i cant comment on how that might effect your sound

heres something to try though

if it is rockboxed, using the bass and treble settings should auto compensate by cutting the db level as you raise them, so that shouldnt be causing the issue

its possible that the distortion is inherant in the files.

i would say turn off the replay gain , then in the sound settings make sure your eq is not turned on in any way and then use the precut feature and take it down to .. oh say -5db.. if there is still distortion, and you are certain no other sound enhancements are turned on, than it must either be inherant in the file, or your headphones.   if there is no distortion, remove the precut, if the distortion comes back than its probably the files that are clipping. .. if no distortion, turn replay gain back on, if distortion is back, than you know the replay gain caused it...

i really know nothing about replay gain so i have no idea if its a possible culprit in the first place.

Thanks, I'm going to it out right now. Hopefully, it isn't the files because I try to get them from reliable places. Would there be a reason for the headphones to be blamed?

i wasnt implying that the files were flawed. some music is just recorded in a way that it contains distortion.  some albums are notorious for this, such as most of norah jones, amy winehouse back to black, and a handfull of others

I actually have no idea. I just read through the Rock Box manual and messed with what I thought I understood. lol

Aha! Now we're getting somewhere...enabling the replaygain in Rockbox does nothing unless your files have been scanned and tagged with replaygain info. So the distortion you're hearing may well just be a result of the loudness war. I use foobar2000 to replaygain my flac and mp3 files.

First of all, try to turn off EQ and other useless sound setting and see if you still get distortion.

Just because these things may be useless to you doesn't mean they are useless in general.

Do I just scan my tracks and that's it?

First, you have to add your files to the foobar library....then, right-click on them and you'll see replaygain in the menu.....select scan slection as albums. Once it scans, it will prompt you to update the files.....do so, then load the updated files on your Clip+.

So were you successful in ReplayGaining your tunes and loading them back on the player? If so, does it work better?

Yeah, really easy program to use. I could hear the difference right away. I can keep the volume at the same level without worrying about the next song being too loud or too low. Also, the music sounds a little more clear and I could tell which songs were actually clipping and which weren't. I wasn't too happy about having to load all on my music back on to my player, but it was definitely worth it. lol =)
