DAC/Amp, or just DAC? suggestions for a newbie, please

Hi guys,

I'm a newbie here (the forum and higher end audio), and I'm looking for some advice.

I'm looking (i think) for a DAC/headphone amp all in one thing.  I just got a pair of Beats...(just kidding.  actually m50s tongue.gif), and I want to get a better sound out of my computer.  I know the M50s don't really need an amp, but I was thinking that I could avoid buying a dedicated amp if I later pick up a HD595 or something like that.  Is this a good idea, or should I stick with a dedicated DAC only, and deal with an amp later if it actually becomes necessary?  What type would you suggest I get (either with or without amp)?  Portable would be nice but isn't completely necessary.

I'd like to keep it at $150 or less, and around $125 if possible.  The music is on a Mac, if it matters (I have no idea lol redface.gif), and I listen to mostly rock/alternative, and some jazz as well.

Is the FiiO E7 a decent choice?

Thanks for all your help beerchug.gif

Hm, I'd say that the E7 would be a pretty good choice.  If you ever do feel the need to upgrade the amp, which you really shouldn't worry about until you get nicer headphones, you can always get the LOD adapter for the E7 and use it simply as a DAC, or you could just get the E9.
