Help needed with Dual 1229 pls - is there something missing?

Hi there

I have just come across my first idler drive TT in the form of a Dual 1229Q.

The table is in excellent cosmetic condition and still has the original plinth, dust cover and box.

However, something is not quite right with the 'table.

The platter is sitting on the main turntable bed and doesn't spin.  My gut is that the bearing is missing, or something that is responsible for holding the platter above the bed.  Also, the motor is spinning all the time, whether the arm is over the table or on its rest.  I have thought about sending it off to someone knowledgable such as the guys at fixmydual.com, but as an inveterate tinkerer, I would really like to get it working myself such that I understand how it all works!

I have some photos here of everything that is in the box:

The platter with strobe timing disc still on the underside:

The main bed in the plinth:

The other stuff in the box - 33.3 spindle and stacker:

Accessories

The underside of the table:

Underside

The hole where the spindle sits:

Spindle well

When the spindle is inserted in the above hole, it fits nicely and feels properly greased, however, once the platter is placed on top, it sits directly on the turntable bed and has led to the circular scratches you can see on the main bed outside the large central depression.

I've tried looking for other photos on the web of what this should look like, and also looked for an alleged Youtube video showing platter removal, but couldn't come up with anything useful

I would be very grateful for any pointers from anyone who has one as to whether I am missing a bearing, or something else which holds the platter up?

Thanks in advance!

Hey there and welcome to the forum :)

I'm afraid I cannot help you, although I have a pristine 1229 on a Grunding plinth - when I bought it was working fine but it hadn't ever seen a "doctor" after all those decades. I sent it for a complete overhaul and rewiring and is now at least as good as it ever was when bought new. It's a tremendous piece of a turntable and my Dual favorite idler.

I hope this is not against forum rules but, unless someone more knowledgeble chimes in, I suggest you ask about this issue on the vynilengine forum. There's a dedicated Dual forum with quite a few experts that will most certainly help you. I've seen part of your problem described more than once and shouldn't be too difficult to fix. You can also download all the manuals for it for free :)

Mine's fitted with an AT-120E cart and is just perfect for my (small) classic rock album collection. Do yourself a favor and fix it - I'm sure you'll be delighted on what it can do around the grooves!
