Are IEMs a faulty concept or am I just unlucky with these brands? CrossRoads and Hippo become QUIET!

I just didn't use my Hippo Shroom for a month and it became extremely quiet. Now I have to tune it again with loud pink noise I guess? It's just isn't cool if the system works like this.

I already had to return the CrossRoads MylayOne X3 for similar misfunctions.

I am disappointed. It's like the whole IEM concept works like this that I have to tune them again and again  to work or I am just unlucky with these brands and others "just work?" It's no problem if I have burn it in at the beginning... but only at the beginning!

By the way I mostly listen to audiobooks. Mostly. If you ask me why do I "need" an IEM then... because it doesn't fall out my ears. And the occasional music should sound good too.

You're just unlucky.

If that was the case, you got to wonder how IEMs work perfect off the shelf or whilst in the post for weeks from the Far East. Dynamic drivers are dynamic drivers, works the same way as their full sized alternatives.

OK. Is there anything I can do to the Hippo Shroom phones? One half is good but the other half became quiet. Can a technician repair it or does it belong to the trash can?

It almost sounds like a driver flex issue. This happens to me once in a while with my MTPG. After using them for a while, if I have to take them out and reinsert them the left driver can sound dull until the pressure in my ear equalizes.

If there's some moisture in your ear from using IEMs for a while, the tip on your IEM will probably seal a little better than when you first put them in. This can create some pressure that buckles the driver a little bit causing the loss of sound you are hearing.

There are 3 things that you can do that I can think of:

- wait a little while before reinserting your IEMs so that the moisture in your ear can evaporate

- try using some kind of foam tips on your IEMs, such as Comply tips or the foam Monster Supertips

- get some balanced armature IEMs to replace your dynamic driver ones. BA IEMs aren't susceptible to driver flex.

1. Make sure the sound ports are clear of earwax.

2. Contact the manufacturer and ask to return/repair.

This effect you describe should not happen. Period.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Actually I kind of cleaned it with a toothbrush + a needle + baking soda. But this stupid Hippo Shroom is just faulty by design! It has so big holes earwax easily go in. Other designs are not like this.

Anyways I don't like it so I have to buy new! But this time it will be headphones, not ear buds.
