I personally did not see much change from amping. I usually listen on my clip zip+. I also have an e07k/ipod80/lod, but it didn't seem to give me much more tbh.

This (http://www.head-fi.org/t/631704/double-review-etymotic-hf3-sony-xba-3-with-appearances-from-the-vsonic-gr07-mkii) should answer your question about the HF5

By no means do they need amping, in fact they work well unamped with any source you care to try them with, but if you happen to have an amp, they can benefit from one. I had mine through the Fiio E7 and they work well with that.

Guys, does anyone know how to make those sound colder?

They are smooth and warm from iphone 4s  and I like them but I would also like a more neutral feel sometimes.

Maybe a sansa dap will do that?

If you want them cooler do some reading up on Colourfly C3 as a possible option.

Can one of the regulars here tell me whether the gr07 will benefit from a dedicated amp/dac ( ie fiio 07k ) in comparison to the clip zip that I'm currently using?

thanks..

I haven't tried the one you mentioned but I've just not found enough of a difference with the gr07 to warrant carrying the extra bulk with all the various portables I've tried. Until recently. I really, really like the gr07 paired with the new continental v3. It changes the presentation just enough. Bass slam is bigger and mids are fatter, more aggressive with better note weight. But is it worth it to run out and spend what the v3 costs? Hell no. I wanted to try a tube based portable for all my phones and happen to really like how these pair.

My opinion is twofold. First I think they greatly benefit from an amp/dac if you are in a quiet place you can do some serious listening. I definitely can hear the difference with my Dragonfly or E17 when I am at my desk. Second, I agree with Shane in the fact they don't really benefit while mobile to make it worth it for me. When I travel or I am out and about, the iPhone is more than adequate. I have tried the Fiio and in no way is it worth the extra hassle but that's mainly because of my surroundings and attention level.

No, its not worth it, I bought a uha-6s mkii (op amp 209) to pair with the j3 to go with the gr07, minimal improvements if any. I think the bass could have tightened up a tad tad bit, but no absolutely not worth it. The gr07s just don't scale well.

Its all relative, I won't listen to anything unamped anymore just becuase I have one and it doesn't take up that much more room (headstage Arrow and C&C BH) and I think all of my IEMs sound better amped, some just a little with the punch and Clarity and others everything, soundstage, detail separation etc. but is it worth it - well that is everyone else to decide.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess that there's only one way to find out whether it's worth it for me. wink.gif

Just got these today and burning them in.. just about the same SQ as my cmoybb+hf 5 pairing. Soundstage is very wide though not too much vertically. Great clarity in the mids, and better timbre than the hf5+CMoyBB pairing. Sibilance exists but should smooth out after burn in. Awesome awesome balance and coloration in the music.

The only thing about these is putting them on and off. HF5s, all you have to do is popem in and that's it. These, you have to bringem over the ear,and kind of twist in (at least for me)

I've been using the ety tri flanges (medium) for almost 2 years so getting a seal was a bit of a challenge. Anyone that uses the ety triflanges got any tips?

I find that the gr07s excel with simpler music, and rather struggles when it comes to complicated passages.

Really? Like what? The 07 is actually among the fastest iems I've heard, and that includes armatures.
