Are you rich enough for this hobby?

Hello folks,

As I start off another work week, I am curious to know if you ever feel that you are short of dough when it comes to buying headphones.

Whether, you crave to earn more so that you can get the next high end disc spinner in your armoury.

Whether you feel that you are having to sacrifice on other priorities of life in order to sustain this expensive hobby.

Or, are you forced to curb your spending on audiophile equipment in order to attain financial security.

I am pretty young and do not earn enough to keep buying the HD800s and T1s.

I am sure that as I grow older and scale the corporate hierarchy (I do a paid IT job), I shall gradually earn more and more.

But, would my audiophile ears still be in good shape to appreciate all this cutting age equipment? (Once I am past 50, I might be rich; but will I have the keen ears of a 30 year old and be able to analyze the HF extension of top end headphones/speakers?)

Share your thoughts please... normal_smile%20.gif

i am not rich enough for this hobby and probably never will, it will cost em an arm and a leg to get more headphones as my life expenses (house, food, utilities, internet) comes first. but luckily i have another 6 months before im kicked out for being 19.

No.
But I do feel I'm severely short of dough when I'm peeking into a Lamborghini dealership.

I think having little money is a bit of a blessing, especially when it goes to headphones. It really makes me not only appreciate my gear more, it makes me want to appreciate my gear more. I know I can't just throw money at an issue and hope it resolves it, I have to spend time with it and really come to like it.

I think if I were a richer man, I would have bought a replacement to my K271's a week after I got them, I was so bored with them. But because I don't have money I had to spend time with them, and and because of them, I came to really, really love them.

So maybe it's better to not have money. biggrin.gif

In short, nope. I'm just starting off, though, so hopefully I can afford some nicer things but in the mean time modding is my friend.

Yes. I've been lucky to have jobs that pay well (albeit after nine years of higher ed) and a good family.

I also set limits and haven't bought any audio gear for just about two years. If anything, I need to thin the herd and roll the money into something else.

I really agree with this. Remember less than a decade ago when high end was $650 headphones? Now, flagships are $1000+. I feel that when I can finally afford $1000 headphones, the flagships then will be $3000+.

Even as it is, I don't earn much money and I have to make a lot of sacrifices for my equipment. This, I feel, makes everything even more dear as I have to work every hard for it. I give up stuff like fashion, frivolous visits to the theatres, vacations, trips with my friends, and eating out at restaurants and such too frequently. Most of my money either goes towards my savings account or the occasional audio gear.

Noone is rich enough (or very few) but I am TOTALLY nutty enough for this hobby!, and most of my money doesn't even go for headphone equipment, I throw most of my money at my full sized speaker system.

I don't make a lot, but when I want something I just start saving and eventually I'll get there. I don't buy things that are lower quality or missing features just to be cheaper. I'm saving up for a flight to and from RMAF in colorado in october and to buy whichever top of the line custom IEM setup will work best for me. It's a good deal of money but it will be a purchase I can sit on for years without worry of replacement. If you take this approach, you are always rich enough to get what you want, depending on how long you are willing to wait and what you are willing to sacrifice in the mean time.

This. It baffles me to no end when I see people I know and coworkers get crappy gear/gadgets just because they want it now. I hold a similar mentality to you: If I can't afford the best (which will be awesome to use, and will last me years and years), then I save up for it without settling for some low quality version.
