I really like my Clip+!

I'll contribute!

Mainly use the ES5s with J3 or iP4 on the go.

With the D6, it is my transportable.

What player are you using with ubuntu?

clip+ uses microSD just in case you didnt realize.

The signal going from a DAC to an AMP is weaker than the one going from the AMP to the headphones... So what's the point of the huge LOD wire?

no true, after the DAC, there is an attenuator.  The purpose of LO is to bypass the attenuator in the DAP.  Have you noticed how loud the LO is?

So what's the point of amplifying the LO if it's already loud?

Amp is to apply more power to the phones.  dB/mW  DAP, have a low mW output, amp will supply more voltage to higher impedance phones to raise the power for power hungry phones.  make sense? Line out maybe loud, but some phones may not get enough a line out voltage swing level or power.  Also, there is rumor going around saying the its beneficial because of bypassing internal Amp for better exterior amp.  Not true, amp distortion is orders less than headphone distortion.  

  Something I like to know is why a more powerful amp with very small output impedance makes the sound very tight?

The LO has a fixed voltage output and a high output impedance. The result is that the voltage drops when a headphone is directly connected. On the other side is the signal better as the one of the headphone out. In conclusion an amp is needed..
