Isolation and closed back headphones <V NEWB QUESTION ALERT>

This is probably an idiotic question and I really have tried to find an answer without posting but have been unsuccessful, so here goes (with apologies to experienced members).

I understand that closed back headphones provide better isolation than open backed ones.

I get that they leak more sound from the sound source out. Going the other way, though, do they still reduce external environmental sound from coming in - say more than ear buds?

Background:

Some members of my household like the TV on always. I prefer to listen to music. I would like us to be able to be in the same room and enjoy our various preferences (rather than, as now, me always asking them to turn down the *****bleep telly).

I don't really care if sound leaks out from the headphones (I listen at pretty low volumes anyway so any leakage won't be heard over the telly), but I'd like to reduce the telly noise from coming in.

I've tried ear canal phones (Etymotics) but I get the hot itchy ear syndrome that I've seen reported by others in these forums, so unfortunately they're not suitable for me.

Although I set out to find some nice over the ear HPs with closed backs, the most promising HPs that I've found through my research so far (that meet my other requirements and listening preferences) have turned out to have open backs.

I understand that open backs provide less isolation, but am hoping (against hope really) that they might still be OK (if not optimal) at reducing sound entering vs sound leaving.

Thanks in advance for your advice on this question.

You should really have posted this in the full-sized headphones section.

Anyway, open-back headphones are definitely not suitable for you.  Your average open-back blocks literally no sound at all and pretty much sounds like a pair of speakers to those around you.  You'd definitely want closed-backs for your purposes.

Also, they'll never block as much noise as IEMs do, but they can block enough for your purposes, probably.  You'd just want to look around for the ones that isolate the best.  Also depends on your price range, how much will you be willing to spend?

One more thing, etymotics tend to be somewhat uncomfortable to most at first, it usually takes around a week for you to get used to them. They're really quite intrusive with their tri-flange tips, and would probably be more comfortable with bi-flange or single-flange tips, though they wouldn't isolate as much.

closed are good. Perfect for your needs, but on-ear or circumaural? Also what genres do you listen to?

Thanks for your very quick responses - so it looks like closed are the go.

DaBomb - Thanks for your very helpful advice. I did give the Etymotics a good go (although didn't try to use different style tips). My ears seemed to object to them more rather than less as time went on. Sorry if this was the wrong forum - I thought (perhaps incorrectly) that portables could also have open or closed backs and was trying (probably unsuccessfully) to focus on a technical question about "what is the characteristic of an open back" (the remainder was just meant to be an explanation for why anyone would ask such a question).

randomkid - Very good questions - As I say, I tried to focus on the general "technical" question rather than going into too much detail about what I'm looking for in a headphone as I recognize that I need to do a lot more research before seeking specific recommendations for headphones (and in a different sub-forum). ...But thanks so much for your help. It is hugely helpful to understand that no matter how much I may love the sound (descriptively, not literally) of a certain headphone that it's just not going to work for my listening environment.
