Will it make a huge difference?

I've been using Beyerdynamic DT 990s with a headroom total air head portable amp. I love the quality and sound but was wonder and have never gotten to experience using good headphones with a desktop amp. At certain volumes my music starts to get too distorted to be enjoyable (I like it louder than most). I don't really understand the ins and outs of everything audio so I don't feel stupid in asking : Would a desktop/higher quality amp allow me to play my music louder without distorting it as much?

Yes, but it depends on the amp. They aren't created equal.

What you're probably hearing is your amp clipping. That happens when your headphones demand more power than the amp is capable of delivering. That shows up as distortion in the low end because that requires the most power to move the drivers.

I don't know what your budget is, but I'm a big fan of the Dynalo. There's a new model available for $300. It delivers 1W of clean, neutral power - overkill for the average headphone. Your ears will bleed before it bottoms out.
