Strange black stuff on Grado cantilever

I just noticed that my Grado Gold1 has black stuff all over its cantilever. To my ears it doesn't affect playback performance. I am just a bit weird out by it because my Grado Black1 doesn't have it. What is that black gunk and is it normal? Pictures below:

Looks like the kind folks over at Vinyl Engine answered my question. The black stuff is dampening material and goes all the way up the cantilever on the Grado Gold1. The Grado Black1, being the cheapest cart in the line up, doesn't feature this dampening material. Good to know!
